  1. Second quantisation.  Elementary excitations in systems of interacting particles;  collective modes, quasi-particles.
  2. Degenerate Boson gas. Superfluidity.
  3. The dielectric properties of the electron gas.  Plasmons.
  4. Electron-phonon interactions, polarons, and the Peierls instability.
  5. Dielectrics and ferroelectrics.  Structural phase transitions.
  6. Superconductivity.  Brief introduction to different approaches to High-Tc superconductivity.
  7. Magnetic properties of materials.  Diamagnetism, paramagnetism and ferromagnetism.
  8. Amorphous materials, spin glass and glasses.

 

 

There will be weekly homework assignments and quizzes. The relative weight of the credits earned for this course will be:  Quizzes 25 %, homework 10 %, two midterm exams, totalling 25 % and final exam 40 %.

 

Dates for the midterms:  19 March and 9 April 2004.
